Cosmetics: our 4 tips for consuming less but better

Cosmetics: our 4 tips for consuming less but better

In the era of overconsumption that has become the norm, it's time to participate in the collective effort by consuming less but better. To achieve this, it is essential to question our current mode of consumption in order to take stock and start afresh on new bases. And it starts with cosmetics! Here are our few tips for becoming a real consumer-actor and equipping your bathroom and your skin with the best dermocosmetic treatments in a Slow beauty approach.

1 – Question your way of consuming and sort it out

To give new impetus to your routine, it is essential to ask yourself the right questions first.

Do I really need all the cosmetics that are in my closet? What budget do I allow for the purchase of my care per month, per year? Where are the majority of my products made? Am I careful to sort expired products, waste?

The answers to these questions will determine whether you are more:

  • The shopaholic collector

In this case, do not skip the sorting step.

First, we check that the products have been opened for a short time. To help you, you will see on the packaging (case, tube, jar, etc.) a pictogram indicating 3M, 6M, 12M or more; it is the PAO (expiry after opening). After the date indicated, the product is no longer recommended for application.

Tip: the longer the product expires, the more likely the product will contain synthetic preservatives that are potentially irritating to the skin. Pay attention to this when shopping!

Then, among these still usable products, locate the duplicates. No need to multiply the care, it is necessary to return to the essentials. A single day cream is enough for your skin's needs, so give what you have in several copies.

Finally, we verify the origin, the manufacture of the products and the ingredients that compose them. Keep only products that respect your skin and the environment. Do not panic, we will come back to this in the following points.

In conclusion, opt for minimalist cosmetics.

  • Good student on the path of reason

The advice of this first point is superfluous, you can move on!

2 – Rethink your beauty routine

Now that you see more clearly, that the cupboards are empty and that your care is reduced to the bare minimum, it's time to look at your skin.

Indeed, it is not necessary to multiply the creams and other "miracle" serums to bring comfort to your skin. Start by listening to it and determining its type. What does she need the most? This is how you can target the essentials to have in your bathroom.

For a routine adapted to your type and your skin problems, experience speaks for itself. And if you feel like you're wrong, that's okay. Turn to professionals (at the dermatologist, in the pharmacy, etc.) or have your skin diagnosed to better understand its needs. This way, you can focus your attention on the products that will really do him good. Each of the treatments in your routine must have a specific role to bring all its benefits to your skin.

For the face, here is the simplest but effective routine that we recommend:

  1. A cleanser and/or make-up remover adapted to the sensitivity of your skin, to eliminate impurities accumulated throughout the day without damaging its natural barrier
  2. A day and/or night treatment corresponding to your skin type or the imbalance to be alleviated, to provide it with all the nutrition or hydration it needs
  3. Do not forget a scrub, preferably without grains, in order to renew your skin and improve the assimilation of treatments
  4. Depending on the degree of imbalance in your skin, you can add a serum to prepare the skin to receive day and/or night care or a mask for small imbalances that appear regularly

However, the body should not be neglected: in addition to a shower treatment and a shampoo, do not skip the step of hydration. Add a body cream to your ritual. Finally, like the face, it should be exfoliated once a week to promote cell renewal and have beautiful skin all year round.

3 – Ban petrochemicals and say hello to naturalness

Now that you have understood the importance of rationalizing your beauty kit to bring only the essentials to your skin, it is time to look at the composition of your favorite skincare products. Indeed, if you are used to taking the first product that comes along or cracking on the latest fashionable skincare presented by your favorite influencer without paying attention to its composition (and all the more so if you have sensitive skin !) this needs to be remedied. You've come a long way trying to better understand your skin, don't ruin your progress!

Beware of ingredients of synthetic origin, often derived from petrochemicals; avoid parabens, mineral oils, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, PEGs, synthetic preservatives, etc. These synthetic and ultra-processed ingredients will mask your skin's problem and give the illusion of healthy skin. Your little skin problems will no longer appear there as long as you apply the treatment in question, but stop for a few days and the problem will resurface and perhaps be worse! Some of these components are even endocrine disruptors, causing harmful disorders on your skin but also on your health in general.

To sum up, if you simplify your skincare ritual, choose products in the same line and bet on naturalness. Orient yourself towards the simplest possible formulas, almost "raw", with a maximum of ingredients of natural origin and derived from plants. Vegetable oils and butters, essential oils and hydrosols, and other active ingredients extracted from plants are extremely rich in active and beneficial molecules for the skin. Speaking the language of the body, they are perfectly recognized by this one. Your skin, your body, your hair, will be amply satisfied with this simplicity. This is the Dermocosm'Ethic Bio approach.

Be aware, however, that naturalness does not necessarily rhyme with quality! It is likely that you will be fooled by the marketing of certain brands that claim naturalness on their packaging thanks to the ISO 16128 standard. This standard allows brands to claim a percentage of naturalness in their products without the ingredients no longer containing 50% natural material, and without guarantee of non-presence of controversial substances. Which is totally nonsense vis-à-vis the very definition of “natural”.

You will therefore be tempted to help yourself with one of the cosmetic applications available on the internet. However, be careful, because their rating system is not the same from one application to another. Indeed, the elements to be taken into account are so varied that the analysis of a product very quickly becomes complex (ingredients, their concentration, instructions for use, area of use, controversial substances, age of the target, etc.). So be aware that no application can take into account all these criteria at once. For example, if one of the scanned ingredients is considered a potential allergen, look at the ingredients of your usual care, because you have probably encountered it before and you are not necessarily sensitive to it.

Even when it comes to ingredients, minimalism is key!

4 – Definitely turn to organic

So if turning to cosmetics of natural origin is not enough to ensure the quality of my skincare routine, what should I do to provide an answer to my skin?

Organic cosmetics, and in particular Dermocosm'Ethic Bio, is today the best solution to meet the needs of your skin by combining simplicity, naturalness and effectiveness.

Rely on organic labels such as Cosmos Organic, Cosmebio or Ecocert. Strictly controlled, the formulas that are labeled contain at least 95% of ingredients of natural origin and at least 10% of ingredients from Organic Farming in total. Either a guarantee that the ingredients are not only natural derivatives as allowed by the ISO 16128 standard.

Products must meet other requirements, including:

  • ethical and sustainable sourcing of the raw materials used in their composition,
  • guarantees at the level of the organic origin of the ingredients,
  • respect the principles of green chemistry with gentle and non-polluting active ingredient extraction reactions,
  • participate in responsible waste management,
  • ...

The other advantage is that with these labels, cosmetic ingredients that have been decried for years, such as synthetic polymers, parabens, chemical filters, etc., are prohibited. Thus, you will participate in the ecology of your skin as well as that of the planet.

At Gamarde, we meet all these criteria and go even further by offering 100% natural skincare for the most part, formulations without synthetic preservatives, and carefully chosen ingredients to meet the needs of all types. skins for optimal skin tolerance.
